With the publication in 1951 of his book Catcher in the Rye, Jerome David Salinger became one of the fundamental American writers of the 20th Century. For reasons that still remain shrouded in mystery, he disappeared in 1965, withdrawing from the world and refusing any contact. Salinger is said to be alive today and living somewhere in New Hampshire. After the mythical book, the man himself has become a living legend.

In 2007, the French writer, Frédéric Beigbeder, decides to leave for the USA seeking out Jerome David Salinger, now 89 years old. As he searches for Salinger, followed closely by the camera of Jean-Marie Périer, a film unfolds of a French writer seeking out his personal and cultural sources, while creating a vivid portrait of American contemporary culture.

5 of 5 Catching Salinger November 11, 2013
Reviewer: Jim Barnes from Toronto, Ontario (Canada)
J. D. Salinger's death in 2010 has contributed to a renewed interest in his published works and has caused more than a few of those who identified with his characters and found a real peace in his prose to go back and, as way of tribute, re-visit his writing. The Jean-Marie Perier film, "Catching Salinger," is a wistful and respectful acknowledgement of the positive contribution this American writer made to his millions of readers. It is Holden Caulfield-like in its search of the reclusive author and speaks to the inner desires of all who have read Salinger and want just a little bit more. The film is humourous, informative, highly entertaining and engaging. As a teacher who has taught Salinger's works to hundreds of students I would recommend this film be added to all courses that include any of Salinger's prose. Kenneth Slawenski's 2010 biography "J.D.Salinger" is an excellent companion read.
